History: Emperor Charles' Favorite Beer

Brouwerij Het Anker was founded in the 1 4th century by the Beguines of Mechelen – today it is one of the few Belgian breweries that still brew within historic monastery walls. Emperor Charles V, who grew up in nearby Mechelen, is said to have greatly appreciated the beer from Het Anker. The name Gouden Carolus (Golden Carolus coin) honors this connection.
