What are Trappist Beers?

Trappist beers are among the most sought-after beers in the world. The official label Authentic Trappist Product (ATP) requires strict criteria: brewing within the monastery walls, under the supervision of the monks, profit for the monastery.

There are only 14 recognized Trappist breweries worldwide.

The Main Trappist Styles

Dubbel

Dark, malt-focused beer, 6–8% alcohol. Classic: Westmalle Dubbel.

Tripel

Light, fruity, 8–10% alcohol, dry finish. Classic: Westmalle Tripel.

Quadrupel

Strongest Trappist beer, dark, sweet, notes of plum & chocolate, 10–12% alcohol. The King: Westvleteren XII.

1. Westvleteren

Inventor of the modern Dubbel and Tripel.

3. Chimay

Largest Trappist brewery in Belgium. Chimay Bleu is a classic.

4. Rochefort

Rochefort 10: dark, complex, world-class Quadrupel.

Conditioned with Brettanomyces wild yeast – fresh and aged are two completely different beers.

6. Achel

Smallest Belgian Trappist brewery, rare and coveted.
